Santa Claus is coming to town -- already

Local malls invite families to join holiday celebration

1823: "A Visit from St. Nicholas," better known as "Twas the Night Before Christmas," is published anonymously for the first time in the Troy (New York) Sentinel. The poem, which is largely responsible for some of the conceptions of Santa Claus from the mid-19th century to today, would later be attributed to poet Clement Clarke Moore, who eventually acknowledged authorship.
