1 dead in 5-vehicle Polk County crash on Interstate 4, deputies say

Deputies: Several hospitalized including 2 children

POLK COUNTY, Fla. – One person is dead after a crash involving five vehicles on Interstate 4 in Polk County, deputies said.

The crash happened around 7 p.m. Saturday in the eastbound lanes of the interstate near Highway 557.

Witnesses told deputies the driver of a black Jeep was traveling west on I-4 when the Jeep struck another vehicle.

The driver of the Jeep then fled, crossing through the median and into the eastbound lanes before hitting a truck head-on, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office. It is unknown at this time if the Jeep struck other vehicles.

The driver of the Jeep was pronounced dead, deputies said. The person who was driving eastbound in the truck was listed in serious and unstable condition.

There were other vehicles involved in the crash with additional victims, including two children, who were taken to hospitals in the area, deputies said.

Lanes were shut down following the crash Saturday night. The westbound travel lanes were moving again later in the night.
