Man dies in DeLand shooting

Police ID slain man as 22-year-old Preston L. Reed

DeLAND, Fla. – A 22-year-old DeLand man died after being shot in the head in a gun battle between occupants of two vehicles, according to police.

Police said Preston L. Reed, of DeLand, died in the shooting, which occurred around 2:30 p.m. Sunday in downtown DeLand.

According to police, at least two vehicles were involved in the shooting.

"I was just hoping I (didn't) get shot," said Terrence Baylock, who said he was leaving church when he heard at least seven gunshots.  "The cars (were) going past and the other car was chasing the other car and (the people inside) were shooting."

Reed suffered a gunshot wound to his head and was taken to Halifax Medical in critical condition.  He died Sunday night, according to police.

Police said the shooting is believed to have started near Chandler Avenue.

"Our detectives are continuing to work through this case, which includes trying to identify who was involved and responsible for Reed's death," police said in an email.

No other details were released.
