Driver shot at crashes into power pole in South Apopka, deputies say

Driver strikes light pole, tree while fleeing from shooting


SOUTH APOPKA, Fla. – A driver who was shot at while sitting in a vehicle accidentally crashed into a power pole in the area, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

The driver crashed his vehicle around midnight Sunday on South Hawthorne Avenue at West Ella J. Gilmore Street in South Apopka.

Deputies found a power pole lying on South Hawthorne Avenue when they arrived at the scene. The Sheriff's Office said an area search was performed and it was determined the crime occurred on Apopka Hills Circle at 15th Street.

Authorities said the driver suffered a cut or abrasion to his eye from glass breaking or a bullet fragment.

The victim told deputies he was somewhere in the area 12th Street and Marvin C. Zanders Avenue when the incident occurred.

The victim said he was stopped at a stop sign when he heard bullets hitting the vehicle and heard the vehicle's glass breaking. He told deputies he then stepped on the gas and accelerated away from the scene in order to avoid the gun shots.

While fleeing the scene the driver struck a light pole and a tree. He told deputies he did not see the person who was shooting at him and did not see any vehicles in the area.

The Sheriff's Office said it is still investigating the incident.
