Fun Spot employee recognizes ATM skimmer, calls 911
CELEBRATION, Fla. – A suspected skimmer is in jail after he was recognized by a Fun Spot employee over the weekend.
Osceola County deputies released surveillance images showing a man putting skimming devices at two bank ATMs in Celebration. The skimming devices were found inside the ATM at the SunTrust Bank at 650 Celebration Avenue and a drive-thru ATM at 74 Blake Boulevard, according to deputies.
Saturday evening, a Fun Spot employee said she recognized the man from photos on recent news reports. After verifying it online and with co-workers, 911 was called.
"I think we have the ATM skimmer that was caught on Celebration on ATM camera, I think we have him in the arcade," said the Fun Spot employee.
"He looked very relaxed. You would've never guessed this was a guy that was wanted," said Fun Spot owner John Arie Jr.
Arie said the suspect was seen with friends at the arcade.
"They left the boxing game, he hit the ATM on the way, he didn't withdraw any money, he didn't put anything onto our ATM either. That is when they started headed down towards the go-kart tracks," said Arie.
Deputies were waiting for him there. They told Local 6 they received two different IDs from the suspect; one of them listed his identification as Alexandru Tomescu. He was booked into jail under the name John Doe, deputies said.
"The most important part is that we got this guy off the street and that's a good thing not only for the Orlando residents, Osceola County residents, but our tourists that visit Orlando -- we don't need that," said Arie.
The man, who deputies said was in possession of illegal narcotics, was arrested and charged with fraud by use of a scanning device and two counts of possession of a controlled substance without a prescription.
Investigators say they do not believe any data was exposed prior to their discovery at the ATM on Blake Boulevard.
