Orlando police shoot, kill man at apartment complex

Undercover drug officers take another man into custody

ORLANDO, Fla. – An investigation is underway after Orlando police shot and killed a man at an apartment complex, Orlando Police Chief John Mina confirmed to Local 6 News.

The shooting happened around 9:36 p.m. Wednesday at the Palma Alta Apartments.

Two undercover drug officers were at the apartment complex to follow up on an unrelated case, police said.

The two officers, identified as Yong Hall and Amanda White, approached the men. There was a confrontation that eventually lead to police shooting and killing one of the men, identified as Izzy Colon, and taking the other man, Ricardo Caban, into custody.

Caban has been charged with reckless display of a firearm and possession of firearm and ammo.

Colon's family says Colon was unarmed.

"My brother was not playing with guns that's not true," one family member said.

Police haven't commented on the family's claim.

Neither officer was injured in the incident. They are on paid leave while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates. White has been with OPD since 2009 and Hall has been with OPD since 2007, according to police.

Police shut down Pershing Avenue in both directions Wednesday night as they sort out exactly what happened.
