Man tried to rob thrift store, punched employee in getaway, Orlando police say

Cops: Store volunteers held down man until officers arrived


ORLANDO, Fla. – A man was arrested after police say he robbed a community thrift center near downtown Orlando and was held down by volunteers until police arrived.

Police said James Butler, 54, attempted to steal multiple items from the Community Food and Outreach Center on West Michigan Avenue on Friday afternoon.

Butler punched a female employee while trying to get away, according to the report. 

Butler was held down by volunteers at the store until officers arrived, police said.

During Butler's arrest, officers found a glass pipe in a package of Newport cigarettes with cocaine residue on it, according to police.

He was charged with robbery and possession of drug paraphernalia.
