Gunman shot by off-duty Orlando police officer

ORLANDO, Fla. – Orlando police have identified on Monday the man arrested in Sunday's officer-involved shooting near a club parking lot.

Jalen Atkins, 22, has been charged with attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer with a firearm, aggravated assault on an law enforcement officer and reckless display of a firearm in the shooting on International Drive, near the parking lot of Lux Ultra Lounge. 

Investigators say an Orlando police officer noticed a man, later identified as Atkins, firing a gun and called for backup, about 2 a.m.

At some point, investigators say the officer felt threatened and shot Atkins. 

Atkins was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center for treatment. He was booked into Orange County jail Monday afternoon, according to booking records.

As standard procedure in officer-involved shootings, the Florida Department Of Law Enforcement is now investigating. 

The Orlando police officer involved as been placed on paid administrative leave, which is also standard procedure.
