16-year-old arrested in connection with shooting

ORLANDO, Fla. – Officials say a 16-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with a shooting that injured two unarmed teen boys, ages 13 and 17.

The shooting started with an argument on Feb. 5 around 5:30 p.m. at the Millenia West Apartments on Fitness Circle in Orlando.

The 17-year-old victim was shot in the abdomen. The 13-year-old was shot in his lower back and buttocks.

Deputies said they were able to identify Artavius Thomas as the shooter. He was apprehended in Georgia but deputies said they plan to have him extradited to Florida.

"Whenever children are carrying guns, that's an ingredient for failure," said Sheriff Jerry Demings. "This is something to me that this community should be outraged about."

Thomas was charged with attempted felony murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, aggravated assault with a firearm, attempted robbery with a firearm and use of a firearm during a felony, among other charges.

Deputies initially said they believed the shooting was gang related. Demings said he plans to continue efforts to stop gang-related crime in that neighborhood.
