Residents in the Royal Highlands subdivision heard the plane motor sputter out and heard the plane crash, according to fire officials.

Crews from Lake County Fire Rescue and Groveland EMS searched the wooded area of Indigo Road for over an hour before finding the crash scene and the pilot.

"While our firefighters were searching the wooded area for the report of the downed plane for about an hour, the pilot actually was actually able to free himself from the wreckage and walked up to them" Professional Firefighters of Lake County said in a Facebook post. "It is amazing that he was able to walk away from the wreckage."

The pilot also dropped a pin on his iPad before crawling out of the plane to show crews the crash site, firefighters said. He refused treatment and was the only one in the plane.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
