Rehabilitated loggerhead turtle released to sea

PONCE INLET, Fla. – A 155-pound loggerhead turtle was released Tuesday after nine months of rehabilitation at the Marine Science Center's turtle hospital.

The turtle, Alice, was found on June 18 on the beach in St. Augustine debilitated, covered with barnacles, and underweight at 121 pounds.

Veteran Craig Pelton treated Alice for pneumonia with antibiotics known to be successful in treating similar infections in humans.

"After six months of antibiotic treatment, Alice has responded well, and her blood work and X-rays have indicated that the infection has resolved," said turtle rehabilitation manager Melissa Ranly. "She has regained full strength in her front flipper and has gained well over 34 pounds, now weighing in at 155 pounds. We are so pleased that this innovative treatment has proven successful."

Alice was released Tuesday in Ponce Inlet.
