Grandfather pulls boy from pool; paramedics resuscitate child

PIERSON, Fla. – Deputies said a 2-year-old boy who was airlifted to an Orlando hospital after being found unresponsive in a swimming pool in Pierson died on Saturday.

The Volusia County Sheriff's Office said it was called around 7:40 p.m. about a near-drowning at a home in the 300 block of West Washington Avenue.

Officials said the child's mother and grandfather were at the home and discovered that 2-year-old Sebastian Jones was missing. The grandfather went outside to look for Sebastian and found him at the bottom of the swimming pool, deputies said.

The grandfather removed Sebastian from the pool and the family began CPR until paramedics arrived to take over, according to officials.

Paramedics resuscitated Sebastian, who was initially taken by ambulance to Florida Hospital DeLand before being airlifted to Florida Hospital South in Orlando for further treatment.

Deputies said on Monday that Sebastian had died over the weekend.

The incident is under investigation by the Sheriff's Office.
