Predators fall to Soul in season opener

Soul defeats Predators 70-63 at the Amway Center


ORLANDO, Fla. – The Orlando Predators were defeated by the Philadelphia Soul 70-63 Sunday evening in their season opener at the Amway Center.

In his Predators debut quarterback Randy Hippeard completed 20 of 25 passes for 233 yards and eight touchdowns with one interception. Wide receiver Kendal Thompkins had six catches for 78 yards and two touchdowns, while Justin Hilton grabbed two scores as well and had 67 yards. Larry Brackins added three touchdowns for 41 yards and Greg Carr grabbed four catches for 24 yards and a touchdown.

The Predators had a 49-42 advantage entering the fourth quarter but Philadelphia cut the lead off a 19-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Marco Thomas. A failed two-point conversion put the Predators up 49-48.

The next Predator possession resulted in a turnover as the Soul picked off a pass intended for wide receiver Kendal Thompkins and ran it back 30 yards for a touchdown putting them in a 56-49 hole.

The Predators answered with a 42-yard drive that resulted in an 11-yard touchdown to tie the game 56-56.

The Soul came back to score on the next drive and attempted the onside kick, which the Predators recovered to give them short field. They were able to score from a yard out which gave Orlando a 63-62 lead with 36 seconds remaining.

Orlando came up with a crucial interception in the end zone but a holding penalty negated the turnover. The next play resulted in a Soul touchdown which gave them the winning score, ending the game 70-63.

The Orlando Predators will take on the Jacksonville Sharks Friday in Jacksonville.
