Brevard County deputies warn about 'Move Over' law

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – Officials on Thursday held a news conference in Brevard County to announce an initiative to bring awareness to the move over law in Florida.

Alongside Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey were several law enforcement officers, including his son, who is a Florida Highway Patrol Trooper.

Ivey says in 2014, the United States saw traffic fatalities involving officers jump 33% from the previous year.

In an effort to cut that number down, officials are reminding drivers that it's Florida law to move over or slow down when an emergency vehicle is on the side of the road.

"All we have to do is move over or slow down and we will take that number way down," said Sheriff Ivey. "We will be able to avoid the traffic fatalities that are taking the lives of the individuals that are out there working every day to save us."

Ivey went on to say that there will be more officers on the road looking for drivers breaking the law.

Message boards displaying reminders about moving over are also in the process of going up on major roadways.
