FPL poser attempts to collect money from customers
FLAGLER BEACH, Fla. – Flagler Beach police are warning residents about a phone scam going on in the area.
The scam involves a person posing as a Florida Power Light employee advising the customer that they failed to make a payment and that it must be made immediately.
"Phone scammers posing as FPL employees are targeting customers across our 35 county service territory," a post on their website reads. "These scammers are using false phone numbers that could appear on a caller ID to be FPL. These calls are not from FPL. We will never call and demand credit card information or take Green Dot Money-Pak cards as payment. In fact, we do not ask for any personal information from you unless you initiate the contact."
The company also said that if a customer is ever unsure of the caller to hang up and call FPL back at the number listed at the bottom of the bill.
Police said anyone who receives this type of call should contact law enforcement.
