Man changing tire struck, killed in Osceola hit-and-run crash

FHP identifies victim as Gerald Watson, of Palm Bay

OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. – A 57-year-old Palm Bay man changing a tire on the side of a road was killed in a hit-and-run crash Thursday in Osceola County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said Gerald Watson died in the crash, which happened around 7:25 p.m. at U.S. 192 and Hibiscus Road.

The FHP said a vehicle was traveling west on U.S. 192 in the outside lane as Watson was changing a tire on a Volkswagen Passat on the north shoulder.  The vehicle struck Watson, who was thrown about 50 feet onto the grass shoulder, according to the FHP. The vehicle that struck Watson did not stop, troopers said.

Watson's wife was in the VW, but did not see the vehicle that struck her husband, said troopers, who added that the Passat was not hit.

Troopers said the crash remains under investigation and charges are pending.

The westbound lanes were shut down Thursday night.
