Man accused of fleeing police jumps in Brevard canal, dies, officials say

MELBOURNE, Fla. – A man accused of beating a pregnant woman before fleeing police jumped into a Melbourne canal, collapsed and later died, according to authorities.

Melbourne police said James P. Powell died Sunday night, hours after the initial incident.

According to police, officers were called to the  500 block of North Wickham Road around 2:45 p.m. in relation to a domestic dispute.  Officers said a pregnant woman was by Powell, her "alleged boyfriend."

An officer tried to take Powell into custody, but he ran away, police said.

Powell jumped over several fences and entered a canal area, according to police, who said a perimeter was being established when an officer saw Powell enter the water and collapse.

Officers performed CPR and Powell was revived and taken to Wuesthoff Hospital in Melbourne, police said.  Powell was later taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center and died, police said.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement was asked to conduct an investigation into Powell's death.
