Stomach illness strikes Atlantis Elementary students, staff

198 students not in school or left early

PORT ST. JOHN, Fla. – Several Atlantis Elementary students and staff members fall ill Friday with intestinal issues, and 198 students either did not attend school or went home early with their parents, said Michelle Irwin, Brevard Public Schools spokeswoman.

Local 6 News partner Florida Today says school officials contacted the Brevard County Health Department, which dispatched nursing support staff to the Port St. John campus.

Workers are sanitizing and re-cleaning various common surfaces.

The food service was also checked, Irwin said.

"We are working with the health department, and they have no reports of any trending viruses. They have surveyed doctors in the area to obtain that information," Irwin said this afternoon.
