Juveniles start fire in DeLand while playing with lighter, deputies say

3 kids, ages 9, 12 and 12, face misdemeanor charges

DELAND, Fla. – The Volusia County Sheriff's Office said at least two juveniles have been taken into custody after starting a brush fire that spread about 17 acres.

Deputies said three kids, ages 9, 12 and 12, were playing with a lighter in the woods and started the fire near 2735 W. State Road 44.

After deputies arrived to the scene of the fire, they determined it may have been started by juveniles. After the children's mother granted permission to speak with them, deputies determined what happened, according to VCSO.

Forestry tractors, Air-One and the Volusia County Fire Department worked together to contain the blaze, which VCFR said is close to being 100 percent contained.

The children were taken to District 2 for processing. They face misdemeanor charges.
