Cops: Man shot victim armed with knife to defend brother

DELTONA, Fla. – Volusia County deputies have identified the man who was shot and killed outside of a home on Sunday and say the shooter was defending his brother in a fight over driving on a neighbor's yard.

Deputies said Elvis Valentin, 36, of Deltona, was shot and killed Sunday night outside of a home in the area of 551 N. Floyd Circle.

The 29-year-old Deltona man who shot Valentin told deputies that he was defending his brother after Valentin confronted him over driving in the yard, according to the report.

Deputies said the man walked outside and saw Valentin holding a large knife, and he had it raised as Valentin approached the man's brother.

The man fired a single round from his handgun at Valentin to stop the threat, according to the report. Valentin was pronounced dead at the scene.

The shooter was taken to the hospital for evaluation following a medical episode believed to be related to anxiety, according to deputies.
