EOC, FCAT science scores for Volusia County released

School officials report results for biology, US history, civics

DeLAND, Fla. – The Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test, or FCAT, science scores and End-of-Course results for biology, U.S. history and civics were released Friday for the school district of Volusia County.

School officials said the EOC results indicate outstanding achievement in each of the subject areas for Volusia, adding that the county exceeds the state in percentage of students passing in nearly every subject and grade level.

Algebra 1, algebra 2 and geometry Florida assessment results will be released at the conclusion of the state's validity study, officials said. Biology, geometry and U.S. history results are reported using scale scores and achievement levels.

The FCAT science assessments were administered in fifth and eighth grades. School officials said Volusia exceeded the state in both grade levels.

"Our students achieved outstanding results in each of these subject areas," Superintendent Tom Russell said. "I am pleased to see an increase in the percentage of students scoring at a level 3, which underscores our teachers' dedication to student achievement. I am very proud of our students and teachers for a job well done."

  • 75 percent of all students earned a Level 3 or higher, compared to 65 percent in the state
  • 90 percent of ninth graders earned a Level 3 or higher, compared to 79 percent in the state
  • 62 percent of tenth graders earned a Level 3 or higher, compared to 52 percent in the state
  • 54 percent of eleventh graders earned a Level 3 or higher, compared to 47 percent in the state
  • 56 percent of twelfth graders earned a Level 3 or higher, compared to 41 percent in the state

U.S. History Results

  • 66 percent of all students earned a Level 3 or higher, compared to 66 percent in the state
  • 63 percent of 10th graders earned a Level 3 or higher, compared to 63 percent in the state
  • 68 percent of 11th graders earned a Level 3 or higher, compared to 67 percent in the state
  • 79 percent of 12th graders earned a Level 3 or higher, compared to 61 percent in the state

  • 62 percent of all students earned a Level 3 or higher, compared to 65 percent in the state
  • 62 percent of seventh graders earned a Level 3 or higher, compared to 65 percent in the state
  • 59 percent of eighth graders earned a Level 3 or higher, compared to 60 percent in the state

FCAT Science Results

District Summary:

  • 59 percent of Volusia fifth graders earned a Level 3 or higher, compared to 53 percent in the state
  • 58 percent of Volusia eighth graders earned a Level 3 or higher, compared to 48 percent in the state

The district said it will continue to work with its schools to analyze the data and provide support and guidance for instruction in the subject areas.
