Soft sand could halt driving on Volusia beaches

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – Only vehicles with four wheel drive are allowed on the beach due to the soft sand and folks can expect some driving issues this holiday weekend.

"If it says do not enter or stop just do that because you will get stuck," said Capt. Tammy Marris, Volusia County Beach Safety and Ocean Rescue.

Signs warning beachgoers about the soft sand already decorate miles of the beach.

"This usually occurs every summer when we don't have those high tides and lack of rain," said Marris.

Beach Safety and Ocean Rescue said drivers who get onto the beach should arrive early because space may be limited.

"We will probably have to close some sections off to driving if it gets too soft and it causes a safety issue," she said.

Beachgoers can expect the mounds of fluffy sand to last until a tropical storm comes along.

"It's nothing we can do about it. It's completely up to Mother Nature to bring us some rain and some higher surf," said Marris.
