Brevard County Commision to vote on 'faith-based' invocations
Proposal would stop certain groups from giving pre-meeting invocations
BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – The Brevard County Commission is expected to discuss a proposal Tuesday that would keep representatives of atheist, agnostic and secular groups from delivering invocations at the start of commission meetings.
According to Local 6 News partner Florida Today, Commissioner Curt Smith is behind the proposal.
Smith and his supporters say the first part of commission meetings should be reserved for members of the "faith-based" community.
The commission has been at odds with several groups, including the American Civil Liberties Union over whether atheist and agnostic speakers should give the beginning invocation.
Smith's proposal allows for "secular invocations", but only during the public comment portion of meetings.
