Overdoses determined to be from drug 50 times more potent than heroin, officials say

14 overdoses documented in Brevard County, 1 resulting in death

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – The Brevard County Sheriff's Office and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement announced their results Tuesday in an investigation into multiple drug overdoses originally believed to be caused by heroin.

Officials said preliminary results determined the substance submitted for analysis was Fentanyl.

BCSO said the number of overdoses to date in the area is 14, with one resulting in death.

Experts said Fentanyl is extremely dangerous at 50 more potency than heroin, transmittable even through contact with the skin. It also produces significant respiratory depression.
