Police say the shooting occurred at 1 a.m. at the Watauga Woods Apartments on Watagua Avenue after officers responded to a fight at the pool area.

When the officer arrived and tried to talk with one of the suspects, the man, identified as Albert Davis, ran away and an altercation ensued, according to police.

Police say the officer fired his weapon, and Davis was taken to the hospital in critical condition, where he died.

The officer, who has not been identified, was not injured. Police have not said if the man injured was armed.

"This is a good neighborhood. But, unfortunately, you always have a rotten apple here and there, you know," said neighbor Eileen Curras.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating and the officer has been relieved of duty pending the outcome of the investigation.

"I think a police officer has to protect their own lives too.  I mean, they have families," said neighbor Charlotte Henderson.

A news conference will be held at 2:30 p.m.

Friday's shooting marks the second officer-involved shooting this week. Earlier this week Officer William Anderson was hurt in a hit-and-run and fired his weapon as the vehicle ran him down, according to police.

Police said on Friday that Anderson is doing well at Shands Hospital in Gainesville.
