LAUDERDALE-BY-THE-SEA, Fla. – A Vietnam veteran who was shot while trying to save baby sea turtles has been released from the hospital.
Stanley Pannaman, of Tamarac, was shot Friday night near a turtle's nest in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Local 6 News partner WPLG-TV reported.
Officials said Pannaman was confronted by Michael McAuliffe, 38.
"He was yelling that he hated turtles and the people who try to save them," Pannaman said.
Pannaman, who has a permit to carry, said he pulled out his gun in an attempt to calm down McAuliffe.
"He complied, and I put my gun away, then he attacked me and took my gun," Pannaman said.
Pannaman said he was shot in the backside, and the bullet is still lodged in his buttocks. It should be removed in the next couple weeks.
McAuliffe, a convicted felon, is facing multiple charges, police records confirmed.
