1 killed, 3 injured when car strikes overpass support


POLK COUNTY, Fla. – One man is dead and three others suffered serious injuries in a crash that happened Monday at Interstate 4 and State Road 559.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Jacob B. Johnson, 20, was driving a Nissan Sentra west on I-4 in the inside lane when he struck a median guardrail, causing the Sentra to spin and cross all three lanes of westbound I-4 traffic.

Troopers said the car traveled to the should of the road and struck another guardrail before traveling up the grass embankment onto the shoulder of SR 559, becoming airborne and striking the concrete overpass support.

A passenger, Donald R. Johnson, 21, died from his injuries in the crash. Johnson and two other passengers, Nicholas Salomone, 20, and Hanna Schragin, 20, were taken to Lakeland Regional Health with serious injuries.
