CITRA, Fla. – A 1-year-old girl was found alone in a Marion County home that deputies said was infested with roaches and had piles of trash inside it.

Emerson Ferrufino, 24, was arrested Tuesday in Citra on charges of child neglect without great bodily harm.

According to the Marion County Sheriff's Office, a neighbor called 911 around 2:15 a.m. Tuesday saying that Ferrufino was banging on her doors and windows but was not "making any sense."

Deputies performed a well-being check at Ferrufino's home after learning that a child might have been left in his care, and they found the girl asleep and alone in the home, authorities said.

Deputies said the house was roach-infested and there were piles of trash inside and outside the home.

A two-hour search failed to locate Ferrufino, so the Florida Department of Children and Families was contacted, and the girl was placed in the care of her grandmother, officials said.

Deputies returned to the home around 8 a.m. and found Ferrufino, who said he was unaware that the girl had been removed from the home and he couldn't recall what happened earlier in the night, authorities said.

Ferrufino was arrested and taken to jail.
