Registered sex offender targeted teen in mall bathroom, South Daytona police say

Cops: Man followed teen into bathroom, asked him to perform sex act

SOUTH DAYTONA, Fla. – A registered sex offender has been arrested after police say he targeted a 15-year-old boy at a local mall.

[LISTEN:  911 call placed from mall]

Kevin Gill has been charged with lewd and lascivious conduct and soliciting another for lewdness in the Saturday incident at the Sunshine Park Mall.

South Daytona police say the boy went to the mall  with his father and excused himself to use a public restroom when Gill came into the bathroom and asked if the boy could perform a sex act on him.

According to the report, Gill also stuck his hand under the stall and made inappropriate gestures.

The teen then texted his father, who was at the mall, who waited for Gill to leave and got a suspect description, then called authorities.

"I was the one who called 9-1-1. I'm the one who followed him around the parking lot through Publix and through Bealls trying to get this guy arrested," said David Jackson.

Jackson is the owner of That One Fun Place, the venue where the teen was at for a party before leaving to go to the bathroom.

"I'm a parent myself and I try to make sure this place is one of the safest places in Daytona you can come," he said.

Police said they were able to identify Gill by looking at the sex offender registry.

He was arrested and booked into the Volusia County jail.

A judge gave Gill a $100,000 bond for his charges. He's also not allowed to have any contact with anyone under 18 without adult supervision and can't use public restrooms.

Police said surveillance pictures show Gill walking in and out of Publix but Gill's family said he's innocent.

"He was at the mall. He went to Publix to get us a steak. I've been with him for 22 years. Somebody is wrong here and it's not him," said Basil Seeley, Gill's husband.
