Melbourne police said Lisa Gaye Leikvold, 57, of Palm Bay, was arrested on charges of first-degree premeditated murder in the death of her mother, Laverne Hoffman.
According to police, officers were called around 11 p.m. Wednesday to a home on Harbor View Drive in Melbourne.
In a 911 call, a man who described himself as a 40-year friend of Hoffman's said he returned to the home and found Hoffman dead.
"It's a murder," the man told a dispatcher. "I went out to get food and when I came back, the mother is laying back there on the floor with a butcher knife in her chest."
Leikvold was found on a couch inside the house and cooperated with officers, police said.
Melbourne police said family strife appears to be the motive in the slaying, but no other details were released.
Leikvold was taken to the Brevard County Jail and was being held without bond. She's expected to make an appearance before a judge later Thursday.
