8 injured in I-95 rollover crash in Volusia

Southbound lanes of interstate reopen in Daytona Beach

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – A rollover crash Saturday morning on Interstate 95 in Volusia County sent eight people to the hospital and forced officials to close the roadway, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The crash happened around 10:30 a..m. on I-95 south near International Speedway Boulevard in Daytona Beach.  Southbound lanes reopened just after noon.

The FHP said a Ford SUV was traveling southbound when a tire separated, causing the driver, a 32-year-old Wachula woman, to lose control.  The SUV left the roadway and rolled over several times, troopers said.

The driver and her seven passengers, six of whom are children, were taken to Halifax Medical Center.  The driver suffered serious injuries, and three of the children were critically hurt, the FHP said.  The ages of the children were not immediately known.

According to troopers, there were reports that some passengers were ejected from the SUV, but the FHP has not confirmed how many were thrown from the vehicle.

The crash remains under investigation.
