Pilot of OIA flight reports near-miss with drone at JFK Airport

Delta Flight 407 from Orlando lands safely

An Orlando flight heading to John F. Kennedy International Airport on Friday landed without incident after the crew encountered a drone near the runway approach path.

Delta Flight 407 was traveling from Orlando International Airport with 154 passengers and five crew members on board when the pilot reported a near miss with a drone.

"Yeah about a mile back there was a drone flying just under the southwest side at the bottom of the airport here," the pilot told air traffic controllers.

The pilot said the unmanned aircraft was about 100 feet under the right wing of the plane.

The plane landed safely in New York at 4:52 p.m. Friday.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident and searching the airport.

A description of the drone was not immediately available.
