Family of fallen officer meets K-9 named to honor him

Dog named 'Briscoe' after Officer Derek Briscoe

ORLANDO, Fla. – The family of fallen Officer Derek Briscoe got to meet a K-9 today whose name is close to their heart.

Officers decided on the name "Briscoe" to honor Officer Derek Briscoe, who died in June at the age of 32.  He suffered an apparent heart attack while off duty at his home.

Briscoe was hired by the Orlando Police Department in June 2009, and in June was given the Award of Merit for "his quick-thinking during a deadly force encounter," authorities said.

Orlando Police tweeted "Introducing the newest member of K9, K9 Briscoe, in honor of our fallen brother."
