Driver sought after Maitland crash

Police say claims man kidnapped women unfounded

MAITLAND, Fla. – Police continue to search for a driver who crashed in Maitland, although claims that he kidnapped three women have been determined to be unfounded, according to authorities.

The crash happened early Monday near Maitland Boulevard and U.S. Highway 17-92.

According to Orlando police, an officer saw three women willingly get into a car on Cadogan Avenue.  The officer later tried to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle, but the driver took off, police said.

Orlando police said Maitland officers attempted to stop the vehicle, which crashed.  The driver ran off, leaving the women behind, police said.  The women were not hurt, police said.

According to Orlando police, the women told Maitland police that they were forced into the car at gunpoint by a man named Chad.

Police, however, said the women were not kidnapped, and they refused to give sworn statements and declined prosecution, police said.

Police have not yet released a description of the man, who faces traffic-related charges, officials said.
