Inmate airlifted after being hit by car in Brevard

SHARPES, Fla. – A 24-year-old Florida state inmate waiting to go to a work release job was badly injured after being struck by a car in a crash Thursday morning just east of the Brevard County Jail Complex in Sharpes, officials said.

News 6 partner Florida Today reported that the driver of the unidentified vehicle that struck the inmate has not been named. The case is being investigated by the Brevard County Sheriff's Office.

The inmate was identified as Adam J. Baxter, a resident of Bridges of Cocoa, a facility that provides inmates with opportunities to hold jobs or take adult education courses, authorities reported.

The accident happened about 5:30 a.m. as the inmate was walking near a bus stop along a darkened stretch of the 600 block of Camp Road in Sharpes. 

A medical helicopter airlifted the inmate to a nearby hospital for further medical attention.  The driver's condition was not immediately known.

Baxter is serving time in prison on grand theft, burglary and forgery charges.

It was not immediately known if the driver was speeding, if alcohol was involved or if charges were filed in the case.
