2 children shot in Orlando as teen shows off gun

Teen taken into custody after shooting

ORLANDO, Fla. – Two children, ages 7 and 13, were shot and a third suffered powder burns to his face when a teenage neighbor pulled out a gun and it fired in the driveway of an Orlando home, deputies said.

The shooting happened around 10:20 p.m. Sunday in the 4600 block of Alrix Drive near Oak Ridge Road.

Orange County sheriff's deputies said a teen pulled the gun out while he was outside a home and several children gathered around.  The gun went off, striking the 13-year-old boy in the hand and the 7-year-old girl in the foot, deputies said.  Their 9-year-old brother suffered an injury to his face, deputies said.

All three children were treated at a hospital and released.

"My daughter started screaming, 'Mom, mom, mom, mom,'" Mary Digiovani said.  "I came running out of the house and she was over on the side of the house by the car, and blood was just pooling under her foot."

The teen who had the gun ran off, but a family member of the victims caught him and an altercation began, deputies said.  The teen fired a shot at the family member, who was not injured, according to deputies.

The family member held the teen until deputies arrived, officials said.  The gun was found with the teen, deputies said.

The teen was taken into custody.

"I don't know what made him pull a gun out in front of a bunch of little kids," said Brian Birdsong, the victims' father said.  "There (were) more little kids than bigger kids."

"It hasn't hit me yet that this could have been such a disaster," Digiovani said.
