Daytona Beach Officials Worry Dog Could Be Used In Dogfighting Ring

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – A pit bull was stolen from a cage Sunday night at the Halifax Humane Society, and the incident was caught on video, officials said.

According to the Humane Society, a man found the dog, described as a brown and white young pit bull, on Big Tree Road in South Daytona and placed it into an after-hours cage about 9:30 p.m. outside the facility.

As the man completed some paperwork, two men who appeared to be carrying a burlap sack unlocked the cage and stole the dog, said the Humane Society, who added that the man who found the dog tried to stop the duo from taking the pit bull.

"We have true concern for the fate of this dog, given the determination these two individuals showed in specifically taking a pit bull," said Miguel Abi-hassan, executive director of the facility. "The Halifax Humane Society is open seven days a week, but they came after hours to forcefully take this dog, preventing us from using our resources to care for the dog and attempt to locate its rightful owner.?

Officials said they're concerned the animal may have been taken to be used in a dogfighting ring.

The culprits were last seen driving a light-colored, four-door Pontiac Grand-Am

Anyone with information about the theft is urged to call the Halifax Humane Society at 386-274-4703.
