Driver arrested in Apopka hit-and-run crash that killed 15-year-old, FHP says

Woman charged with leaving scene of crash with serious bodily injury


APOPKA, Fla. – A driver has been arrested in a hit-and-run crash that killed a 15-year-old boy, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

Silvia Olvera, 23, of Apopka, has been charged with leaving the scene of a crash with serious bodily injury in the incident at Dixie Highway and Main Street on Wednesday afternoon.

Nathaniel Hooks, 15, was attempting to cross Dixie Highway just before 5:30 p.m. when he walked into the path of Olvera's vehicle and was struck, the FHP said.

Troopers said Hooks was thrown onto the hood of vehicle and then onto the ground. Olvera got out of her vehicle and then got back inside and fled, according to FHP.

Another driver behind Olvera's vehicle followed her and called 911. Apopka police officers found Olvera and detained her for FHP, troopers said.

FHP said Hooks died at Arnold Palmer Hospital overnight.

Additional charges are pending, troopers said.
