Volusia County officials considers fine for pot possession

People found with less than 20 grams of marijuana could avoid jail time

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – People caught with small amounts of marijuana in Volusia County may soon face a fine, rather than jail time.

The Daytona Beach News Journal reports that County Councilman Josh Wagner wants people found with less than 20 grams of marijuana to be fined $250, instead of getting a trip to jail.

If the proposal is passed, it would apply to unincorporated parts of the county, but cities could opt into the program.

Two other Florida counties, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach, have similar programs already in place.
