DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Longtime Volusia County Sheriff Ben Johnson announced Tuesday that he is retiring.

Colleagues and family members looked on as an emotional Johnson, who's nearing the end of his fourth term and won't seek re-election, said it has been a great honor to serve the people of Volusia County.

"Much has been accomplished both within the Volusia County Sheriff's Office and the local law enforcement community during my tenure in office, but it's time to pass the torch to a new generation and a new leader," Johnson said.

Johnson highlighted several accomplishments while running the Sheriff's Office, touting the training of his staff, the communications center and a new evidence facility.

Johnson, who's been in law enforcement for 42 years, first ran for office in 2000 and got elected to run Volusia's largest police agency. Since then, Johnson has run for re-election three times and has won landslide victories.

Johnson will depart the agency in December.
