Racing season starts with new Daytona International Speedway

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Friday was the first day of the Roar Before The Rolex 24, an event that kicks off racing season. Not only did fans watch their favorite drivers, but they got a glimpse of the new Daytona International Speedway.

It's fast cars going at top speeds around the track, a final rehearsal before the Rolex 24 and a sneak peek of the newly renovated Speedway.

"They spent their money pretty well. It looks great actually," said Woodrow Bailey.

"Obviously the great sign they put up is new, some nice lighting up in front," said Glenn Matula.

Fans could only appreciate the tower and grandstands from the infield, because workers were busy perfecting the inside.

"We're finishing up painting, scrim, and banners. Now that the bricks and mortar, concrete, steel are up, it's now all the finishing touches that add the color and bring the property to life," said Joie Chitwood III, President of DIS.

News 6 took a tour of the motorsports stadium to see what fans can expect come the next big race. From plush new seats, wider concourses and signage, to tables and chairs where face fans can eat. 

It was a a two and half year long construction project that the Speedway said was worth every minute.

"Can't wait. A couple more weeks, we'll open the gates and let our fans enjoy it. I think they are going to be impressed," said Chitwood.
