People come out to have 'coffee with a cop'

Event held at selected McDonald across central Florida

APOPKA, Fla. – Local police officers were out Saturday at selected central Florida McDonald's to meet the public and enjoy conversation and coffee.

A new way to help ease tension between the public and local police departments was held across the area Saturday.  All it took was handshakes, conversations and some McDonald’s coffee.  This new event was held at selected McDonald’s and seemed to be a big hit.

The idea was to get the community to sit down and get to know the law enforcement officer.  Hear how the officers feel and way for officers to see how the public feels as well.

“There are a lot of paradigm shifts going on in law enforcement these days and a log of animosity between the communities and everything and I want to make sure we don’t have that in the city of Apopka. I want to make sure we are intertwined with the residents of Apopka and have a good working relationship with them," Apopka police Chief Mike McKinley said.

It is important to rebuild the relationship between law enforcement and the community. This was just the first step.

The event was such a success that plans are already in the works with some area law enforcement agencies to put another coffee with a cop event on the calendar.  No dates has yet been set, but keep an eye on agency Facebook pages for the information once it’s confirmed.
