1 hurt, suspect in custody after officer-involved shooting in Sanford, police say

Police: Roshad Smith taken into custody Friday night

SANFORD, Fla. – One person was hospitalized after an officer-involved shooting Friday in Sanford, according to the Seminole County Fire Department.

The shooting happened around 7 p.m. Friday near U.S. 17-92 and Americana Boulevard.

Police said they received a call about a suspicious man with a firearm on 17-92 and Airport Boulevard. When police arrived, they found a person that matched the given description.

News 6 is told at some point shots were fired. Police have not confirmed who fired shots first, but one person was taken to Central Florida Regional Hospital with a gunshot wound. Police said the person suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Police told News 6 that a suspect, Roshad Smith, was in custody Friday night.

Police are calling the incident an officer-involved shooting. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement arrived to investigate those details.

Sanford police said traffic congestion was reported at Airport Boulevard and U.S. 17-92. Police suggested that drivers use an alternate route, such as taking 27th Street to Sanford Avenue.
