Burned body of man found in woods identified, Volusia County deputies say

Man found by small fire in woods near DeLand

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – Deputies are investigating after a burned body of a man, identified as Malcolm Rule, 52, of Orange City,  was found by a small fire in the woods near DeLand, the Volusia County Sheriff's Office said.

Deputies received a call after 3:30 p.m. Saturday about a fire in the woods to the east of the Budget Inn on East New York Avenue.

A few minutes later, a witness who was at the scene reported finding Rule's burnt body, deputies said. Rule had apparently built a fire in the woods that scorched some trees and brush.

Deputies were called Friday night to the same area about a man who was sleeping on a bench by the motel and was refusing to leave, according to the Sheriff's Office. When deputies arrived, the complainant said the man could stay a little while longer, but then would need to leave.

The Sheriff’s Office said it is trying to determine if Rule was the same man who had been told to leave the night before.
