Mix 105.1 spearheads drive during coldest week of year

ORLANDO, Fla. – News 6 radio partner Mix 105.1 collected hundreds of blankets to help the homeless during one of the coldest weeks of the year.

"We find things all the time in our closets that we don't even realize we have, so it's always wonderful that we can put them to good use," Elizabeth Duvinage said.

In two hours, the pile of blankets, coats, scarves and gloves grew to an overwhelming heap. People drove up with bags of donations, and the jackets and blankets were loaded up for the Coalition for the Homeless.

As a thank you for cleaning out their closets and helping out the drive, donors received a cup of coffee from Dunkin' Donuts and tickets to the Food and Wine Festival.

Mix 105.1 said the blanket drive was inspired by the years of charity work led by beloved radio host Scott McKenzie, who died in 2015.

Many of the donors who stopped by said they hope to see the program grow.

News  6 helped take the donations to the drop-off site at the Coalition for the Homeless.
