South Daytona police search for hit-and-run driver that crashed into home

SOUTH DAYTONA, Fla. – Police are looking for a hit and run driver who crashed into a home and took off on Wednesday night.

"It was like a big bang, the noise," said Tai Souza.

That noise was the car that plowed into the home at the River Golf Townhomes around 11:30pm.

"Glass and bricks everywhere. Just a mess," said Souza.

Souza rushed over to her family's home after she heard what happened.

"My stepdad was on the couch and he's lucky that the bricks missed him because it came all the way up to the door," said Souza.

Police said the driver ran the stop sign at the intersection of Beville Road extension and slammed into the concrete block wall. The kitchen was littered with debris.

"I was surprised it didn't go through the glass door in the house itself," said Souza.

Investigators said the man took off on foot but Souza claims he struggled along the way.

"He got away, but he was hurt. He had to have been because he was bleeding," she said.

Police said someone described the driver as a black male wearing a hoodie. Investigators used DNA from blood left behind to help track him down. Police said the car was not reported stolen but was a rental.

No one inside the home was hurt.
