Family escapes DeLand house fire

Granddaughter leads family of 4 to safety

DeLAND, Fla. – A family of four escaped a house fire unscathed early Monday morning after the roof collapsed and trapped the family in the backyard, according to DeLand fire officials.

The fire ignited at a home on South Stone Street just after 1:30 a.m. Fire officials said when they arrived the house was fully engulfed with flames through the roof.

Four people, including a 4-year-old and a 14-year-old, were trapped in the backyard when crews arrived and the granddaughter led everyone to safety, officials said.

A DeLand police officer led an elderly family member to safety.

The fire also knocked out power poles.

The State Fire Marshal and DeLand Fire Department are investigating the cause of the fire. Officials said the fire appears to have started to the left of the house and worked its way around the structure.

The American Red Cross is helping the family.
