Judge orders mental health evaluation for kidnapping suspect

Stephanie Augustin accused of kidnapping 2-month-old from South Florida

ORLANDO, Fla. – A woman accused of abducting an infant from South Florida then leaving the little girl alone at an Orange County apartment has been ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation.

Stephanie Augustin, 23, appeared in court Monday for the first time since her arrest.

Investigators say Augustin and her 14-year-old cousin forced their way inside a relative's home near Fort Lauderdale and took the 2-month-old baby at gunpoint.

The pair were arrested along the Florida Turnpike hours after the abduction, officials said.

Investigators say the duo was located while returning to South Florida after leaving the baby alone, strapped in her car seat at the Village Springs Apartments on Lake Orlando Parkway.

The baby was not hurt.

Augustin is now facing life in prison if convicted in the kidnapping.
