Man charged in deadly downtown Melbourne beating

A 21-year-old Indialantic man has been charged with second-degree murder in the beating death of a man whose body was found in the parking lot of a popular downtown restaurant hours after the Super Bowl.

News 6 partner Florida Today reports the deadly attack took place Feb. 8 outside of Matt’s Casbah, 801 E. New Haven Ave.

Gianluca Massaro was arrested late Wednesday and booked into the Brevard County Jail Complex in Sharpes. He was being held without bond pending a hearing today before a judge at the jail.

“He was picked up in Indialantic,” said Cmdr. Dan Lynch of the Melbourne Police Department.

The case began after passers-by spotted the badly injured man about 2:30 a.m. Feb. 8.

Melbourne police said Kent Douglas Wilbanks, 53, was unconscious and bleeding from a gaping head wound. Wilbanks was later pronounced dead at Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne.

Detectives treated the case as a suspicious death based on evidence pointing to a physical confrontation, and they questioned witnesses and patrons near the crime scene.

Police also circulated a flier with the victim's photo and a dark, grainy surveillance image of a man wearing a jacket standing in front of Matt’s Casbah shortly before the injured man was found.
