Firefighters were working Friday to contain the blaze near Shepherd Drive and Challenger Memorial Parkway in Titusville, according to Brevard County Fire Rescue.

Fire officials say the brush fire is 35 acres in size and 100 percent contained.

Officials said the fire has burned to the edge of the roadway, and State Road 407 has been shut down between Interstate 95 and State Road 405. Traffic is being diverted away from the scene.

Crews decided to close the roadway to traffic so they could stop the fire from crossing the street where there is a neighborhood nearby.

"There's a lot of homes on the other side that could have been in danger so they were able to keep it contained by closing the road down and getting an aggressive foothold on this," Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Channing Taylor said.

Troopers are waiting for the scene to clear before re-opening the roadway. They are expecting leftover fog and smoke in the area which could cause issues for drivers. They say they will be out overnight monitoring the conditions.

Crews from Brevard County Fire Rescue, the Titusville Fire Department and the Four Communities Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene.
